Top tips for passing FR

Success in the FR exam depends on a disciplined approach to preparation and smart exam-day strategy, says top lecturer Dave O’Donoghue.

One of the most important steps to take when preparing for this exam is making full use of the ACCA Practice Platform.

Practise as early and as often as possible, especially in the final three weeks before the exam, when you should focus on completing questions under strict time pressure. Becoming comfortable with the computer-based format will significantly improve both speed and accuracy.

Another valuable support is enrolling with an ACCA Platinum Approved Learning Provider.

Working with an approved college ensures you follow a structured study plan, cover the examinable topics in the right level of detail, complete assigned homework and attempt properly marked mock exams. This level of discipline can make a major difference, particularly for students who struggle to study consistently on their own.

If you are self-studying, establishing a clear and realistic study plan is essential. Choose a dedicated study area free from distractions, set a firm start date and end date, and decide which evenings and weekends you can reliably commit to study. Map out the syllabus areas and questions you will tackle each week, then allocate these tasks into your planned study sessions. In addition to the main study plan, create a separate revision plan for the final phase of preparation, ensuring you revisit all topics and attempt full-length questions.

Preparing your own notes and summaries is another highly effective technique. Writing out the core principles of each syllabus area helps reinforce your understanding and provides you with personalised revision material for the final days before the exam.

Pay particular attention to the key examinable areas, especially Section C, which focuses on preparing and interpreting financial statements for single entities and groups. While all standards in the syllabus are examinable, the ones most frequently tested include Financial Instruments, Current and Deferred Tax, Earnings per Share, Property Plant and Equipment, Impairments, Leases, Revenue and Provisions.
In the final weeks complete at least two mock exams under full exam conditions. This will help you assess your readiness, improve time management and highlight any areas you need to revisit. Also make sure you explore the ACCA Education Hub, which provides excellent technical articles, practice questions, and examiner insights.

On exam day

Know exactly where your exam centre is, plan your route, and prepare a checklist of items you need to bring. FR covers a wide syllabus, so expect some questions that feel unfamiliar.

Stay calm, avoid getting stuck on difficult parts, and keep moving steadily through the paper.

Strong time management and exam discipline are essential. Remember, you only need 50% so stay focused, stay moving, and don’t give up.
