While many firms are being very prescriptive about the return to work, accountancy firm BDO has told its staff that they can decide for themselves when they come into the office, in a post-pandemic world.

It has said it will not be telling its employees how many days a week it expects to see them in the office. The firm’s UK managing partner, Paul England, said that teams will work out amongst themselves with clients when they should be together and when they won’t!

He stressed: “I can’t give you a barcode or an algorithm to tell each person exactly where they need to be and what they need to do but the trust that we can carry forward from the pandemic is that each individual human probably knows what they’ve got to do.”

BDO employs around 5,500 people in its 18 UK offices. It furloughed 700 staff in 2020 and after a bit of dithering paid back the taxpayer support it received (around £4.1 million).
