CIMA’s Nasheen Wuisman looks at what students can do if they receive the result they hadn’t hoped for.
With results for the May 2026 Case Study exam sitting now being released many students will be celebrating success.
However, we equally recognise that some students will have not received the result they hoped for. This can be incredibly difficult to handle as it often comes as a shock. Many students contact us after receiving unsuccessful Case Study exam and Objective Test results, and we always advise students to reach out to us sooner rather than later if they need support.
When we hear our students talk to us about unsuccessful results we can feel their intense emotions of frustration, disappointment and guilt. This really strikes a chord with me as I remember the highs and lows of my study journey and how much of my life it consumed at times. Since then, and through many years as a tutor, I have learnt that there are a few things you can do to gain perspective:
A result is not a reflection of your ability: There can be several other factors that affected your performance on the day, and one unsuccessful result does not define you.
Try not to feel guilty: There will be implications of having to resit an exam, but internalising this emotion and being hard on yourself will not help.
It is a setback, not the end: Nothing has changed – your goal remains the same and your chosen path is still there. You are still firmly on it.
You are not alone Knowing what to do next after receiving an unsuccessful result can feel overwhelming. Here are some steps you can take:
Talk to us: We are here to listen and help. Our Study Support Team is committed to supporting students, making sure you have what you need to progress and pass your next exam sitting with confidence.
Take flexible empowerment: We have resit guides for all levels, including our new Certificate in Business Accounting guide.
Our Revitalise for self-tailored (traditional) pathway covers Objective Tests and Case Study exams and our Finance Leadership Program Revitalise guide covers Case Study exams. These resources can help you assess your knowledge and access targeted exam preparation guidance.
Gain structure and motivation: Join our Case Study resit programme and community to help alleviate feelings of isolation, re-gain self-confidence to move forward and keep you motivated.
During your studies you will feel various emotions. But there is only one that lasts a lifetime – the one you feel when you very proudly say “I am CGMA qualified”.
