SNP auditor quits

Johnston Carmichael has resigned as the SNP’s auditor.

The Scottish-based accountancy firm has worked with the national party for over 10 years, and said the decision was taken “after a review of its clients portfolio”. A spokesperson for the firms said: “As a regulated organisation we adhere to our obligations on client confidentiality and do not discuss client business.”

Peter Murrell the SNP’s recent CEO was arrested and later released by police without charge following 11 hours of questioning over the party’s finances.

Time is now of the essence for the SNP, as it has to present its accounts by 7 July. The party has put the work out for tender and has told the electoral commission.
